This review is from: Poetry: The Secret Gems of Poetry Revealed (Paperback)
As a student at degree level studying English Literature I found this guide handy for a reminder (and indeed introduction to some) of the key concepts and approaches to understanding and interpreting poetry.

This book is a fantastic guide for A-level students, providing all of the essentials of poetic analysis, and more than you will be expected to know for analysing unseen extracts from poetry, or short poems, in exams.

For students at degree level the text is for great for referencing certain terms (like if you've forgot the difference between a Dactyl and an Anapest, or if you can't tell your Spondee's from your Pyrrhic's), and is the ideal quick read (or indeed reread) before exams to top up on all aspects of poetic analysis. I reread it in only one day in the build up to exams!

However, I do not recommend approaching this book with higher expectations than revision, gentle reminders and quick referencing for a student studying degree level work (although it is admittingly fantastic for these three needs).

The book is highly approachable, employing elements of humour and easily understood explanations of poetic interpretation, alongside familiar examples of poets bound to crop up in many literature courses (Tennyson, Blake, Sidney and Shakespeare anyone?)

All in all this is a valuable and handy guide for a student
