In Focus-   A Studymates Series

Who else wants to speak French like a diplomat?
Many people learn French for years at school, only to reach a plateau beyond which they never emerge. This book is an effective short-cut to fluency in French.

Now in its third edition, Better French helps the intermediate reader reach fluency by showing them the right way to use ‘problem’ words. It addresses the subtleties of the language: Are donc and alors interchangeable? What about grand or gros? When do you use c’est or il est?  When do you pronounce the final ‘s’ in plus?  Learning the answers to these and a host of other questions can finally steer you to success.

Better French: Achieving Fluency with Everyday Expressions (Studymates) (Paperback)
Although I have a good knowledge of French, this book is invaluable for me. Often it is the simple things that throw me when I'm using French, eg when to use connaître or savoir, when to use emmener or emporter, etc. What is the difference between grand and gros and when should I use jour or journée? There is also a chapter on pronunciation - when to sound the 's' at the end of a word and how the word 'terrible' can have a different meaning according to the intonation you use.

This book is giving me more confidence in using French as I can be sure I am using various words and phrases in the right way.

The book is well-organised with chapters on separate topics. There are also French/English indexes of words. For example, if you wanted to check on how to use ce que, you can quickly find the page from the index. The layout of the book therefore makes it very easy to look up a particular query. You can dip into it and read up on one small section at a time.

The book has provided explanations of many aspects of the French language I wasn't quite sure of - or didn't know! I'm in a French conversation group and I'm going to recommend that everyone buys a copy of this book.

Better French: Achieving Fluency with Everyday Expressions (Studymates) (Paperback)

This excellent little book gives practical advice on how the French actually use their language. It is concise, well structured and has hundreds of examples.

Faults? The later chapters appear to have been hurried or cut short to squeeze them in.

Overall it does what the title says and does it well. Thoroughly recommended.
